symphony of ending

I have such ears for the music of darkness.
As I see the woman hunched at the tram stop,
Pushing the needle, pumping death into her heartblood
I can hear the stirring of the strings,
A miserable overture to a rapturous death.

I can feel the vibrations of this song within me.
As I see the tanks rolling, and the sky open
To rain down forty days and nights of fire
I can hear the keening of the martial brass
Horns awake a death-knell for a sad and loveless world.

I open my ears to the melancholy dirge.
As I see my friends drowning in the darkness within
Their muted cries for help from the bottle's depths
I hear the delicate caress of pipes, stroking, seducing
A memento mori trapped within the amber of a lover's kiss.

I embrace the fugue with my soul entire.
As I see the smoke of death rise to new and darker clouds
Turning rain to burning death and cells to poison fear
I hear the distant thunder of drums, slow, heavy, hammering
Beating an acid rain tattoo on the flesh of the mother.

I hear the symphony of ending rise.
As I see the stars wink out one by one
As one by one my friends turn their backs and leave me
Naked, cold, alone, surrounded by the song of desecration
Each tiny betrayal, a piercing note plucked on keys of ivory.
