As a trend, I do find myself approaching realism more and more as I go along. I remember in the beginning, drawing anime was hard though because it was such a minimalistic style. Changing the reflections in the eyes, the curve of the lips, the angle of the eyebrows could easily change the mood of the character. Getting all of that and the body language to line up with a limited amount of detail was half the fun.

Since I started shading in detail more and more, I have been trying to use consider the effects of lighter and darker spots as affected by a specific light source but it has been difficult.

Study B&W photography. It shows the contrast better and helps you see where the shading needs to go.
